Cape Canaveral Lighthouse – Throwback Thursday to 1994 and 2019

Lets go back to 1994 and see what the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse looked like before any restoration started on the Oil House and Lighthouse Keepers Quarters.

The Cape Canaveral light was established in 1848 to warn ships of the dangerous shoals that lie off its coast of the East Coast of Florida. It is located inside the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and managed by the Space Launch Delta 45 of the US Space Force with the assistance of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation.

The lighthouse is 151 feet tall and contains 167 steps from its interior base to the height of its lamp room. It has five interior floors that are accessible by the stairway.

The current location of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

The Image below is from 1994, over 30 years ago before any real restoration of the Oil House or Lighthouse Keepers Quarters began.

Majestic overall view of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.  Photo also shows the roofless storage shed or Oil House.

Fast Forward to 2019 and a new Lighthouse Keepers House has been built. Below are several photos taken in 2019 during a warm October Sunrise.

About the Author and Photographer: Alden Pitard has over 40 years experience working in the Aerospace Industry at Cape Canaveral, The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Boeing locations throughout the country. He has supported the Space Shuttle Program, International Space Station, 787 Dreamliner and most recently the Artemis Program. During his time at "The Cape" he photographed a majority of the Launch Sites at KSC and Cape Canaveral. As the Space Shuttle program was coming to a close in 2011, the author decided to bike to all the Launch Complexes he could and capture the Space Center and Cape Canaveral as it was - thus "Biking through Space Ruins".
