Launch Complex 46 and the Beach – Biking through Space Ruins

I’ll be posting at least one photograph a day of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse or Cape Canaveral Launch Sites starting in March of 2023.

Space Launch Complex 46 previously known as Launch Complex 46 was constructed in the 1980’s for the Trident II submarine launch testing.

It was later used and modified for the Assent-Abort 2 (AA-2) launch in support for future Artemis launches to the moon. More on that in a future post.

It also sits next to one of the few beach accesses out at Cape Canaveral. Employees are allowed to walk and fish from the beach when open. During launches the beaches are off limits. The beaches here are so pristine and the views and sunsets are amazing. And you can also see back to the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse from the beach. Enjoy these few photos of the beach access at LC-46. Some future photos will include Lighthouse pictures from up in the LC-46 gantry.

About the Author and Photographer: Alden Pitard has over 40 years experience working in the Aerospace Industry at Cape Canaveral, The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Boeing locations throughout the country. He has supported the Space Shuttle Program, International Space Station, 787 Dreamliner and most recently the Artemis Program. During his time at "The Cape" he photographed a majority of the Launch Sites at KSC and Cape Canaveral. As the Space Shuttle program was coming to a close in 2011, the author decided to bike to all the Launch Complexes he could and capture the Space Center and Cape Canaveral as it was - thus "Biking through Space Ruins".
